On

Peace Movements in the Israel-Palestine Conflict

Abstract

2017 marks the hundredth year of the Balfour Declaration, a document that guaranteed support for the state of Israel (A Jewish State) in the Middle East. The British mandate over Palestine began in 1922. In 1947, The British relinquished the mandate after which the U.N. General Assembly on November 29, 1947, adopted the majority plan of the U.N. Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) that called for the partition of Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state and for an international administration over the city of Jerusalem. The state of Israel was proclaimed over this territory on May 14, 1948.

The peace movements in Israel and Palestine is organized around a conflict. Territory and ideology have become points of contestation between Israel and Palestine. The settlements, home to about 600,000 Israelis, are considered illegal under international law. Israel says Palestinian incitement and violence, and a refusal to accept Israel as a Jewish state, are key obstacles to peace. Organisations like the Peace Now, Anarchists against the Wall, Taáyush will be dealt in detail in this paper. The impact that Intifada I and II had on the peace movements in both the sides will be analysed. Violence of the intifada II was not an easy challenge for the peace movement in Israel. What could be the role of social movements for peace amidst discord and violence? Why does the two state movement remain dear to Peace Now but not to the BDS movement? Is boycott a nonviolent method of protest or a strategy? How could a peace movement gain ground and effect a change in the attitudes of the public? The importance of the security discourse in the conflict cannot be wished away. How does the peace movement see the militarism that is embedded in the Israeli society? Is the BDS anti-Semitic as some claim? These are some of the issues that will be analysed.
